Per Hellstrom

Biography :

Trained medical doctor at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, 1978. Preclinical dissertation on gut hormone actions 1985. With continuous work becoming associate professor of pharmacology 1990. After receiving grant at the Swedish Research Council clinical research work leading to position as professor of gastroenterology at Karolinska Institutet 2001. In 2009 position as chair of gastroenterology at Uppsala University, and senior consultant. His research has focused on gut peptide hormones, with findings on the role of glucagon-like peptide-1 and ghrelin on gastrointestinal functions and metabolism being most acclaimed. He also has a deep interest in nitric oxide neurotransmission and inflammation in the gut.
